چکیده

[Nutritional status and breath hydrogen test with lactose and lactulose in Terena Indian children].
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the nutritional status, absorption and tolerance of lactose and the occurrence of small-bowel bacterial overgrowth. METHODS A cross-sectional study including all 264 Terena Indian children younger than 10 years from two tribes (Limão Verde and Córrego Seco) in Mato Grosso do Sul. The nutritional status was assessed based upon weight and height, using NCHS data as referen...
متن کاملPrevalence of lactose malabsorption in Japanese children and adults
The breath hydrogen test (BHT) was adapted for use in young infants and children. The diagnostic criterion of sugar malabsorption in the BHT was determined by oral administration of 0 5 g/kg of unabsorbable sugar (lactulose) to 21 healthy infants and children. A maximum increase in breath hydrogen >0 05 ml/min per m2 was observed in all subjects. A good correlation between results by the BHT an...
متن کاملHydrogen breath test in schoolchildren.
The frequency of negative hydrogen breath tests due to colonic bacterial flora which are unable to produce hydrogen was determined after oral lactulose challenge in 98 healthy Dutch schoolchildren. There was a negative result in 9.2%. The probability of a false normal lactose breath test (1:77) was calculated from these results together with those from a separate group of children with lactose ...

متن کاملHow to Interpret Hydrogen Breath Tests
Hydrogen breath tests using various substrates like glucose, lactulose, lactose and fructose are being used more and more to diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and lactose or fructose malabsorption. Though quantitative culture of jejunal aspirate is considered as gold standard for the diagnosis of SIBO, hydrogen breath tests, in spite of their low sensitivity, are popular for...
متن کاملAcidic colonic microclimate--possible reason for false negative hydrogen breath tests.
About 5% of normal subjects fail to produce increased hydrogen breath concentration after ingestion of the non-digestible carbohydrate lactulose (low hydrogen producers). The existence of low hydrogen producers limits the diagnostic use of hydrogen (H2) breath tests. We studied the effects of lactulose and of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) pretreatment on stool-pH and on hydrogen exhalation after o...
